Ford Mach-E Event - Opinions
Starting off, I do want to preface that I am glad that Ford is making its way into making Electric Vehicles and hopefully convince more people to switch to an EV. Even though all the specs and images of the car were leaked a few days prior to tonight’s event, I was hoping for more of an exciting event.
This won’t be just me comparing the Mach-E to all Teslas for a couple paragraphs, but it always comes to mind to compare newer EV’s with Tesla, since they’re currently leading the industry of EV tech. The front of the Mach-E is very similar to the first variants of the Model X and S, with the front grill being replaced with a large piece of plastic. Secondly, the interior looks like they took the Model S and the Model 3’s interior and added a couple twists to it, as well as some more buttons. My last comparison to Tesla will be that Ford claimed in the webcast that they are changing the world with the release of the Mustang Mach-E, even though Tesla has been working on that for years now.
Moving onto my thoughts of the vehicle itself, I think it was smart of them to name the car after their most popularly known Mustang line. It may have been pretty controversial among Mustang owners to add an Electric SUV to the lineup, but I’m sure people will come to like it either way. Something I noticed right away and wasn't addressed on the webcast were the lack of door handles, where are they? There’s a button located on the window frame above where a handle would be to open the doors - Pretty neat. Overall the design of the SUV is very nice looking with a large variety of colors to choose from, which all look very pleasing.
The specs of the vehicle are what most people will be looking at when purchasing an EV. The Rear-Wheel Drive model of the Mach-E come with two battery pack options, a 75kWh battery pack and a 99kWh battery pack. The 75kWh pack has a 280mi range and a top speed of 111mph with a 0-60 time of 6-7 seconds. The 99 kWh battery sports a 370mi range with a similar acceleration and a top speed of the previous battery pack. The AWD variant of the Mach-E has the same size battery packs, at the expense of less range for about a second less of acceleration time. 75kWh: 260mi of range / 99kWh: 335mi of range.
Following the regular models of the Mach-E comes the super-fast GT model. This AWD model has about 250mi of range with a 0-60 time just under 4 seconds, the Performance GT will do just over 3 seconds. (All specs snagged from Top Gear’s video, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QA-qgSB076c )
Charging is also an important part, with every car Ford includes a “Ford Mobile Charger” for charging at home and also has about 12,000 charging stations the Mach-E can use across the US.
Starting at about $43,000 before any tax incentives, makes it a pretty affordable vehicle for most. This price range is directly competing with Tesla’s Model Y crossover, which starts at $48,000. I am personally pretty excited with what Ford has designed and started within the company and what the future of Ford EV’s will be, but it’s definitely not a “Tesla Killer”.
